PREVIEW EXHIBIT:
Astoria Artists at Work
Astoria Artists at Work brings together work by 30 of the 50+ artists participating in the 16th annual Astoria Open Studios Tour. Featuring painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography, fiber art, mixed media, printmaking, woodworking, jewelry, and more, the exhibition, which opens July 11 and runs through August 2, offers a glimpse into the wide range of creative practices found throughout Astoria.
The exhibition serves as an introduction to the artists and artwork visitors can discover during the free, self-guided Open Studios Tour, July 25–26. Explore the exhibition, find artists whose work inspires you, and begin planning your tour through Astoria’s working studios. View the show Thursday - Sunday from 11:00am - 3:00pm and by appointment. Also, join us for the artist reception during Artwalk on July 11 from 5:00 - 7:00pm.
FOR VISITORS: HOW TO GO ON THE TOUR
Pick up a printed tour guide available in mid-July at galleries, cafés, hotels and the visitors center, and then choose the studios you’d like to visit. Designed to be experienced at your own pace, the tour lets visitors stop into any studio they choose, in any order. Visit just a few or make a weekend out of it!
You can also use the digital version to go on the tour - coming soon, and learn more about each artist on the Artist Profiles - also coming soon.
*A note about parking in Astoria on Sundays - it can be hard to find a spot due to the Sunday Market happening in the center of town from 10 am - 3 pm. If you can, we recommend visiting downtown studios on Saturday and then outskirt studios on Sunday.
Darren Orange, well known for his large, expressive abstract paintings, is participating in Open Studios for the first time since moving to the Astoria countryside. “An artist’s studio is their temple,” he shares. “It’s a sanctuary for exploration. Rarely do people get to witness the process behind visual art. This is a unique opportunity to connect with the community and invite people into that space.”
Sarah Bolerjack, a lifelong artist and longtime Open Studios participant who enjoys sharing her garden studio, “I’ve been doing this long enough that people who return each year have become friends. It’s always lovely to see everyone again. I have new paintings I’m excited to share, and the people who come to see and collect my work become part of the story I’m telling. The stories they share with me during Open Studios fuel my work all year.”
Brandii O’Reagan is also opening her new studio to the public for the first time. “I’m an empty nester, and I converted my son’s room overlooking the John Day River into a studio. The view is incredibly inspiring. I create custom tiles for murals, backsplashes, and garden mosaics, and I’m excited to share this work in a way I never have before, especially my garden art.”
