Meet the artist Saturday, April 12, 5:00-7:00pm

In celebration of Earth Day, AVA presents Pelagic, an inspiring exhibit by multidisciplinary artist and science illustrator, Rena Ekmanis. Known for her deep connection to nature, Ekmanis creates works that showcase the beauty of sea life, and also explore the intersection of art and environmental advocacy. Her work features rare and endangered ocean animals and cetaceans, as well as birds, plants, and landscapes, all reflecting a profound admiration and reverence for the natural world. Ekmanis hopes that through her art, viewers will foster a stronger connection to nature and feel inspired to protect it.

Having spent 17 years on the Big Island of Hawaii, Ekmanis immersed herself in the ocean, spending as much time as possible underwater, drawing inspiration from its vibrant marine life. After relocating to Newport, Oregon a few years ago, she began incorporating plastic debris into her artwork that was collected while beachcombing.

"After moving to Oregon, I was struck by the amount of plastic waste I encountered along the shore. Transforming this debris into art has become a meaningful way to raise awareness about the difficult dilemma of plastic pollution," says Ekmanis.

Her captivating mosaics and paintings not only showcase the beauty of sea life but also shed light on the plastic waste crisis.

With a BFA in Drawing from California College of the Arts and a graduate certificate in

Science Illustration from California State University at Monterey Bay, Ekmanis brings a wealth of experience and passion to her work. Her dynamic creations, including paintings, drawings, and sculpture made from found objects, invite viewers to marvel at nature's beauty while contemplating the urgent need for environmental stewardship.
